Business, Thought, and Management Articles --- A Little Bit about Zen --- China and Zen
Here we will think about China and Zen.
It is said that Zen was established in China. Zen in China is supposed to be the fusion of teachings by Dharma Daishi who came from south India and taught in China, Mahayana Buddhism, and China own thoughts such as Confucianism and Taoism.
To obtain wisdom became more important for Zen than to obtain a stable heart by transmitted from India to China.
Let's take a look at some features of Zen in China.
Zen as Mahayana Buddhism: The word Zen had been already handed down in China with Mahayana Buddhism before the Dharma Daishi came. The teachings says: follow RyoGi (finished teaching), do not follow FuRyoGi (unfinished teaching), follow scripture, do not follow the argument, follow the law, do not follow the people, etc. Zen of China is often classified in Mahayana Buddhism.
Dharma Daishi (or Bodhidharma): He is a monk born in south India, and is regarded as the founder of Zen Buddhism. Since he came from south India, he might have brought directly the south India's Buddhism to China, but it is uncertain. There are various legends about the Dharma Daishi. His legends and sayings have a significant impact on the image of Zen.
Fusion with Taoism: Zen in China has made original development by being fused with Taoism. Buddhism has the concept of "emptiness", and Taoism has the concept of "nothing". The unique "Zen" in China was born at where the "emptiness" and "nothing" have fused.
Shaolin Temple and martial arts: Shaolin Temple (or Shorin-ji) that is a Zen birthplace in China, base of Soto sect of Buddhism, is also famous for martial arts training. It is unknown since when the temple incorporated martial arts for Buddhism training. One theory says that since Dharma Daishi saw the Chinese monks were spineless, he taught them the training methods of ancient India.
Or it says that they started training to protect themselves from the other religious groups' persecution, or to fight off thieves.
The Sixth Patriarch Huineng: When Dharma Daishi passed his cloth and cup to Dazu Huike as his successor, he said those should be inherited until the sixth patriarch, and later successors were not necessary.
The last successor to inherit the secret of Dharma Daishi's mastership is known as the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. Huineng has been also known as his own concepts about Zazen and Zenjo.
Zazen is not the meditation, but the state that mind and sense do not exist, do not be upset even by seeing the self-nature. It is often said as "the state of nothing". They aren't conscious like "would become nothing".
It feels very bold and somewhat strange to remove the concept of "meditation" from "Zen", since meditation should be the word origin of Zen. However, the definition of "Zen" by the Sixth Patriarch Huineng would be the key factor that the Zen made great development in China.
Also, Huineng emphasized "Nirvana Sutra", preaching that Buddha-nature is equipped naturally in the human mind.
Since then, Buddha-nature or Buddha-mind have become the main topics of Zen. It is also said that many of Koan - questions for Zen meditation - are asking about Buddha-nature.
From Cave to Temple, from Begging to Farming: As Buddhism spread in China, its training style have also made changes. There still are some who do training alone in the forests and caves. But many of the monks do training living together in temples. Also, it seems there have been many temples to incorporate farming for self-sufficiency instead of begging.
Zen and Culture: Zen has affected on various cultures. For example Chinese poetry, lyrics, songs, poems, harp, Go (board game), Chinese Chess, and calligraphy, etc., many diverse cultures of China are involved deeply with Zen. In poetries of famous poets such as Li Bai, Du Fu, and Han Yu, you can see the influence of Zen.
