Home --- Topics --- April 2025 Part 6: What you want to do and what your customers want
It is said that when starting a business, you should first decide "what you want to do" and then choose your business to do what you want to do. Certainly, if you are going to start your own business, it is better to choose what you want to do. However, on the other hand, when a business fails, it is often said that "that person only did what he/she wanted to do and did not meet the needs of the customers." When starting a business, which is more important: what you want to do or what the customer wants?
When starting a business, both what you want to do and what your customers want are important.
Even if you start a business, if it's not something you want to do, your motivation won't last. If you continue doing something you don't want to do every day, stress will accumulate and you will lose your motivation and energy. If you make a business out of something you want to do, you will look forward to your work and it will be easier to continue your business with high motivation.
You should do what you want to do as a business, but starting something that customers don't want won't make for a good business. If sales and profits don't grow, your business will stagnate. It's only by providing what customers want that sales and profits can grow and you can continue as a business.
However, often times, what you want to do and what your customers want do not match. Even if you think your product or service is good, it will not sell if your customers do not recognize it as good. Conversely, you may miss an opportunity to sell your product or service by not realizing what your customers want or value.
The important thing is to align what you want to do with what your customers want. In some cases, you may need to change your values ??or way of thinking. In other cases, you may need to clearly appeal to your customers about your value. Brand building and image strategies may also be necessary.
Changing where you sell may be one solution. Go to a place where there are people who sympathize with what you want to do. Go to customers who appreciate your products and services. Going to a place where there are people who want what you provide, can make your business a great success.
Aligning what you want to do with what your customers want is an important key to business success.
