1864 German Adolf Kapelle establishes first trading company
1885 Germany paid compensation to Spain and annexed the Marshall Islands
1914 During World War I, Japan occupies the islands and builds military bases
1920 League of Nations grants mandate to Japan
1944 During World War II, the U.S. forces drive out the Japanese army and occupy the islands
1946 US nuclear test program begins at Bikini Atoll. Islanders evacuate from Bikini Atoll
1947 U.S. administration begins as United Nations Pacific Trust Territory
1948 US expands nuclear testing. Islanders flee Enewetak Atoll
