1877 The United Kingdom establishes the Western Pacific High Commission headquartered in Fiji. The Ellis Islands and other groups of islands are placed under its jurisdiction
1892 Britain declares a joint protectorate of the Ellis and Gilbert Islands
1915 British colony as Gilbert Ellis Islands. Other islands joined the colony over the next twenty years, including the Line Islands and the Phoenix Islands.
1974 Ethnic tensions escalate, with Polynesian-major Ellis residents voting to secede from Micronesia's Gilbert Islands (later Kiribati)

2001 Kiribati and Maldives announce decision to take legal action against US for refusing to sign Kyoto Protocol
2009 Taiwan offers to help Tuvalu fight sea level rise. Tuvalu rejects Copenhagen conference (COP15)
2010 Maatia Toafa elected prime minister. Two months later, he was ousted by a no-confidence vote, and Willy Telavi was elected prime minister
2011 Declaration of a State of Emergency on Water Shortages
2015 State of emergency declared due to severe damage caused by cyclone
