In spite of long martial arts and spiritual training, there is no chance to demonstrate it unless they have no lord to serve. Bushido is a norm to serve the lord. Because a samurai throws his life for the lord and fights the enemy with full power.
Even if there is a master to serve, the Bushido spirit can not be demonstrated in some cases. For example, if the master is ambiguous and has no determination ability, you will not know how to act even as a samurai serving.
Even a samurai who can demonstrate his ability to a great extent when there is a clear command, will be incompetent if he couldn't know what his master want him to do.
A country whose lord is easy to subordinates and has devoted himself to idleness, is at risk from the inside.
In situations that the country is at risk from the inside and the lord cannot be reliable, there is no way for the Bushido spirit to demonstrate.
Sometimes the country is destroyed and samurai lose their workplaces. Then they will have to choose whether to join the new master, become ronin (unemployed samurai), or give up being samurai and search for other jobs.
There are not so many ideal lords. It is hard to serve domineering, lazy, selfish lord. You would be in trouble if the country lose a war even if you serve a good lord. However, it may be the saddest thing as a samurai that he has no lord to serve and no chance to demonstrate his ability.

Bushido is not only to die but also to live. Life is all important and precious. Therefore it is not good to waste any life. Bushido spirit thoroughly hates useless, meaningless death.
Physical and Spiritual Training
There are the Word "rash courage" that contrast well with Bushido. Rash courage is a person's heart that does not think and just violently rampage and assault. The person may look bold, but actually he/she is just not thinking.
Children Grow up Looking at the Back of Parents
Children grow up looking at the back of their parents. To educate and nurture children, parents themselves should first show their example. If parents are training physically and spiritually, and continuing temperance, children will also learn what parents do with nature.
Respect the God and Buddha
Samurai respects the God and Buddha. In fact, many people die on the battlefield. If you are a soldier, you may kill people or you may be killed in a war. Human life is a fleeting one. So samurai needs to cherish the life.
