Tao in Analects

Here we will think about Tao in Analects.

Tao in Analects

The word "Tao" of Confucius is often seen in Analects. "If I hear Tao in the morning, I am happy to die in the evening" is the famous short sentence. What did Confucius mean by saying "Tao" here?
Maybe "Tao" for Confucius meant the ideal state of the nation.
If courtesy and court music are corrected, if well-studied academic people are promoted, and if politics are controlled correctly, the world should be peaceful.
World order were disturbed at the era of Confucius. Confucius thought well-studied academic people should act to correct order of the world. In other words, they should correct Tao (the road).
"Tao" of Confucius sounds somewhat different from "Tao" of Taoism.
Confucius was longing for the world ordered by the courtesy of Zhou. In the society, court music is corrected, and the people are learning well about humanity, justice and filial piety. Tao of Confucius would be the enlightening people's minds, and doing the correct conduct.
At that era, contrary to the Confucius wishes, the world were becoming increasingly disturbed. Confucius went out on a journey of wandering away from his homeland. And he suffered in foreign countries. Sometimes he said he lost hope lamenting that Tao was lost in the world.
Precisely because it was the era that Tao was lost, it has significant meaning that Confucius tried to revive Tao.
