An overview of Belize modern and contemporary history

1798 British settlers defeat the Spanish army
1859 Guatemala, independent from Spain, signs treaty demarcating border with Belize
1862 Officially declared British Honduras
1973 Changed the name of the country from British Honduras to Belize
1981 independence. Guatemala does not recognize independence.
1992 Guatemala recognizes independence.

Politics

It is a parliamentary constitutional democracy modeled on the British parliamentary system. The head of state is the same as the British monarch, but is represented by the governor general. The head of government is the prime minister. The parliament is bicameral.
