Overview of Moldova's modern and contemporary history

1917 Russian Revolution, resolution to annex to the Soviet Union
1918 Bessarabia declares independence and requests integration with Romania (occupied by Romania)
1920 Treaty of Paris recognizes the union of Romania and Bessarabia (but not the Bolsheviks)
1924 Moldova Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic established east of the Dniester in Ukraine
1940 Soviet Union annexes Bessarabia. Merges with most of the Moldova Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to form the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic.
1941-45 Romania regains control until the end of World War II, while German forces invade the Soviet Union.
Late 1980s Moldova national movement revival
1990 Moldova declares sovereignty
1991 Collapse of the Soviet Union. The Republic of Moldova declares independence. Join the Commonwealth of Independent States, successor to the Soviet Union.
