Education

The Comoros Act requires all children to complete eight years of schooling between the ages of 7 and 15. Before that, almost all children go to Quranic school for a few years, starting around the age of five, where they are taught about the Quran, memorize it, and learn the Arabic script.

1975 unilaterally declared independence. Ahmed Abdallah becomes president. Abdallah ousted in coup d'etat led by socialist Ali Soiri
1976 Ali Sowari sworn in as president
1978 A coup d'etat by Bob Dinar, hired by Ahmed Abdalla, who was abroad, overthrew the Soiri government. Soiri is murdered. Adoption of new constitution, change of country name to Comoros (Islamic Federal Republic), reinstatement of President Ahmed Abdallah
1989 A coup of mercenaries led by Bob Dinar assassinates President Ahmed Abdallah. France intervenes, Dinar leaves island
1990 Mohamed Johar becomes president
1995 n attempted coup led by Dinard. President Djohar was dismissed and moved to the French island of Reunion. French forces intervene and the Dinard surrenders
1996 Mohammed Abdulkarim Taki becomes president. Creates a draft constitution that expands presidential powers and establishes Islam as the basis of law
1997 Anjouan and Moheli declare independence from the Comoros. Armed conflict occurs
1998 President Taki died suddenly of a heart attack. Tajddin Ben Saeed Masounde is Acting President
1999 Masounde was ousted in a military coup. Colonel Azali seizes power
2001 Adoption of a new constitution that keeps the three islands as one country but gives them greater autonomy. Country name change (Union of Comoros)
2002 Azari presidential election
2007 African Union sends troops to keep peace in June elections. African Union begins naval blockade of Anjouan island
2008 Comoros and African Union forces land on Anjouan and regain control of the island to the Comoros government.
