1889 Italy establishes protectorate in central Somalia, later unites with southern territory
1936 Integrates with Somalia-speaking Ethiopia to form Italian East African Province
1940 Italy occupies British Somaliland and controls all of Somalia
1941 Britain counterattacks and captures Italian Somaliland
1950 Southern Italian Somaliland becomes Italian Trust Territory Somalia

Politics

It is a parliamentary democratic republic. The President appoints the Prime Minister as head of state and commander-in-chief of the Somalia Armed Forces and head of the government. The parliament is bicameral.
