Late 1800s Centralized state under Tutsi King Kigeri Rwabgiri
1858 British explorers are the first Europeans to visit the region
1890 Became part of German East Africa
1916 Belgian forces occupy Rwanda
1923 Became a Belgian mandate (indirect rule through King Tutsi)
1946 Belgium becomes United Nations Trust Territory
1957 Hutu political party formed
1959 Tutsi King Kigeli V flees to Uganda due to ethnic conflict
1961 Monarchy abolished. Hutu Gregoire Kaibanda becomes president
1962 Independence from Belgium by President Gregoire Kaybanda. Many Tutsis leave the country
1962 Burundi-based Tutsi rebels invade. About 20,000 Tutsis are killed
1973 Military coup led by Juvenal Habyarimana. President Gregoire Kaibanda is exiled

1988 Nearly 50,000 Hutu refugees flee Burundi to Rwanda

1993 Arusha Peace Accord is signed (In Arusha, Tanzania, President Habyarimana signs a power-sharing agreement with the Tutsis, declaring an end to the civil war)
1994 Shot down of the plane carrying President Habyarimana and President Ntaryamira of Burundi over Kigali (the assassinations of both Presidents Habyarimana and Ntaryamira). The Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) launches a major offensive. Extremist Hutu militias and part of the Rwanda army begin a systematic slaughter against the Tutsis. Hutu militia extremists flee to Zaire with nearly 2 million Hutu refugees
1995 Hutu militia militants and Zairean forces attack Banyamulenge (Tutsis)
1996 Rwanda forces invade and attack Hutu militia-held camps in Zaire
1997 Rwanda and Uganda back Zairean rebels, overthrowing Zairean President Mobutu. Laurent Kabila becomes president of Zaire, renamed Democratic Republic of the Congo
2000 Paul Kagame inaugurated as President
2001 New flag and national anthem released
2002 Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo sign a peace agreement. Rwanda withdraws troops from Democratic Republic of the Congo
2003 Draft constitution banning incitement to ethnic hatred
2004 France reports that President Kagame was involved in the downing of the presidential plane in 1994
2006 France issues an international arrest warrant against President Kagame for his involvement in the 1994 downing of the presidential plane. Rwanda breaks ties with France
2007 Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo sign a peace deal
2008 France arrests former Rwanda army officer Marcel Bibgabagabo. Spain issues arrest warrants and charges against 40 Rwanda army officers. Rwanda accused France of playing an active role in the 1994 genocide. Formal decision to conduct all education in English instead of French

Politics

It is a constitutional republic. The president is the head of state and has a wide range of powers, including command of the military. The parliament is bicameral.

Economy

It was severely hit during the 1994 genocide, resulting in widespread loss of life, failure to maintain infrastructure, looting, and abandonment of its main industry, agriculture. Since then, the economy is recovering, and although food imports are still necessary, the situation is improving with the growth of agriculture.
