1884 Colonization by Germany begins
1885 German East Africa is granted by the German government
1905-06 Maji Maji Rebellion
1916 During World War I, British, Belgian and South African soldiers occupy much of German East Africa
1919 German East Africa is dismantled after Germany's defeat. Most of it will be British Tanganyika.
1961 Independence of Tanganyika
