Location

It comprises the eastern half of Timor Island, the nearby Atauro and Jaco Islands, and Oecussi, an enclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by West Timor, Indonesia. To the south is Australia, separated by the Timor Sea.

Overview of East Timor Modern and Contemporary History

1942 The Imperial Japanese Army occupies the entire island of Timor. Battle between Japan and Australia
1945 After the end of World War II, Portuguese control of East Timor is restored. West Timor becomes part of an independent Indonesia
1974 A revolution (the Carnation Revolution) broke out in Portugal, the liberation of the colonies was promised, and the momentum for independence increased.
1975 Fretilin (Revolutionary Front for East Timor Independence) declares East Timor independent. Indonesian forces invade and capture East Timor

The head of state is the president, elected by national referendum, for a five-year term. The president appoints the prime minister, who is the head of government. The parliament is unicameral.
