1899 become a British protectorate
1937 U.S. and British investor Kuwait Oil discovers oil fields with huge reserves
1961 Independence from Britain. Iraq does not recognize Kuwait as independent and claims it is part of Iraqi territory
1980-88 Iran-Iraq War. Kuwait helps Iraq
1990 Iraq accuses Kuwait of stealing Iraqi oil from oil fields near the border. Iraq invades and annexes Kuwait. Amir and cabinet flee to Saudi Arabia
1991 Iraq fails to comply with UN resolution ordering withdrawal. Withdrawal from Iraq due to airstrikes and ground battles by US-led multinational forces. Three months of martial law after the chief returned to Japan

Politics

It is constitutionally an emirate with a constitutional monarchy system. The king is the head of state. The king has strong authority over parliament and the cabinet, and it is seen as a de facto absolute monarchy.
