1893- became a protectorate of France

1946 French rule resumes
1950 Granted semi-autonomy as a province within the French Union
1954- Completely independent from France as a constitutional monarchy "Kingdom of Laos". A civil war breaks out between communists and royalists

Politics

It is a communist dictatorial socialist state that openly supports communism. The president is the head of state and the government is run by the prime minister. The legislative branch is unicameral.
