Overview of modern and contemporary history of Oman

1891 Britain makes Oman a protectorate
1913-20 Civil War. The inland areas are ruled by the Ibadi Imams, the coastal areas are ruled by the Sultans
1920 Through British mediation, Sultan grants inland autonomy
1954 Internal military conflict resumes
1959 The Sultan regains control of the interior
1964 Oil field discovery
1965-75 Rebellion by left-wing forces in southern Dhofar. Suppress rebellion with aid from Jordan and Iran 1970 Crown Prince Qaboos' bloodless coup ousts his father Said. Qaboos becomes king
1999 United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman sign a border agreement defining most of the disputed territory
2020 Cousin Haitham succeeds to throne upon death of King Qaboos
