1992 Approval of new constitution
1993 President Edeyama dissolves the government. Protests and violent clashes with police. France, Germany, US suspend aid to seek democratic reforms
1998 President Edeyama re-elected
2002 Amends the Constitution, removing the ban on three presidential terms
2003 President Edeyama is re-elected. He sent 150 soldiers to Liberia as peacekeepers in West Africa
2005 President Edeyama dies. President Eyadema's son Faure Gnassingbe was announced as president, but resigned after being criticized both at home and abroad. Gnassingbe was elected president. The opposition party is accused of corruption. An estimated 500 people were killed in a riot after the vote. President appoints opposition Edem Kojo as prime minister
2006 Reconciliation talks between the government and opposition parties resumed. signed an agreement providing for the participation of the opposition in the caretaker government
